Wall-E (Sunday, Sept 25 at 8 PM)

Dear everyone,

Thank you for joining us this summer for the Rains Outdoor Cinema. It's been an absolute pleasure for the Rains community to come together for these films. We hope you've enjoyed your time and look forward to a great school year!

The last movie being screened this summer is Wall-E. The film will begin at 8 PM (not 9 PM). If folks come early at 7:30 PM, there will be snacks to share!

Cinema Paradiso

A filmmaker revisits his childhood in the Italian countryside, where he first fell in love with the movies...

A grizzled old projectionist takes pride in his presentation of screen dreams for an Italian town still recovering from World War II. When a child demonstrates fascination not only for the films, but the behind-the-scenes work of presenting them to an audience, it sparks a lifelong friendship.

Giuseppe Tornatore's beautiful 1988 film about a little boy's love affair with the movies won a host of international awards, including Oscar for Best Foreign Film and a Special Jury Prize at Cannes.

Coming this week ...

Cape No. 7

An award-winning film that joins an age-old love-story and a comedy about a rag-tag rock band.

Starring popular singers from Taiwan and Japan, Cape No. 7 took the grand prize at the 2008 Taipei Film Festival with its heartwarming tale of music and longing. After running dry in Taipei, failed singer Aga (Van Fan) returns to his picturesque coastal hometown of Hengchun and joins a band thrown together by Japanese concert promoter Tomoko (Tanaka Chie). With members ranging from age 10 to 80, there's more bumbling than rocking for this ragtag bunch, but a new love song awaits when Aga and Tomoko find seven undelivered letters written 60 years ago.

As entertaining and enjoyable as moviemaking gets, Cape No. 7 is Taiwan's reigning local box office champ, and is gaining much attention from neighboring Asian territories. First-time director Wei Te Sheng delivers an undeniable crowd pleaser, chockfull of humor, romance, nostalgia, and wonderfully quirky characters.

The votes are in!

We have last week's poll results, and it was an extremely close call between three of the movies -- Harry Potter, The Adjustment Bureau, and The Kids are All Right. (Sorry, Shutter Island...) In response to audience demand, we've decided to show all the top choices during the summer. We're also glad to know we have such an eclectic group of moviegoers at Rains!

This Sunday, we'll start off with:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

because it was a top pick, and because Part 2 is premiering on Friday. (Did you get your tickets for the midnight showing yet?) The other films will be screened some time in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned! We have a whole summer of movies ahead of us. =D

Voldemort's power is growing stronger. He now has control over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts. Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to finish Dumbledore's work and find the rest of the Horcruxes to defeat the Dark Lord. But as they race against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes, little hope remains for the Trio, and the rest of the Wizarding World...
